Lye Safety for Soap Makers

Lye (sodium hydroxide for bars, potassium hydroxide for liquid soap) is highly caustic and can cause serious burns. Treat it with respect and these rules become second nature.

The essentials

Wear chemical-resistant gloves and eye protection. Always add lye to water, never water to lye (it can erupt). Mix in a ventilated area and avoid breathing the fumes. Use heat-safe containers (not aluminum). Keep vinegar and running water nearby, and keep children and pets out of the room.

If it contacts skin

Rinse with lots of cool running water for several minutes. For eyes, flush continuously and seek medical help. Don't rely on vinegar on skin — water first.
